I am my own worst jailer. I tell myself, “I don’t have time to create, I’m not creative, I’m not as good as…” These are all untruths or limiting ideas that keep me from the freedom of creativity. This lack of freedom is of my own making. Do you do this too?
Creativity is choice, it is discovery, it is play and it is the most like children we can be, it is an example of freedom. We need to feel free to create. They say the creative adult is the child who survived! The freedom children have in their creativity is inspiring, they are the most free creatives. They create with no fear and no comparison, simply for the joy of it. God, who calls us his children, gives us freedom to create, he created us in his image and he is the ultimate creator! Through creativity, through experimenting, we can discover what we most love to do, we can discover where our soul comes alive, alive to the creative soul God made us to be. God has handed us our freedom through Jesus, he has handed us the keys to life in his Kingdom, we can enter with a song in our hearts, and he has told us not to let ourselves be burdened again to slavery. This can be applied to our creative soul as to the rest of our daily life.
The enemies of freedom are judgement, control and fear but where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. We don’t need to create in shame, or fear or comparison, we have freedom to create because we love to create. Because God designed us to create. When we invite God into our creativity, when we create in an awareness of his presence, we can be free from those fears that hold us back. When you start to create something beautiful you are taking that step into freedom, you are showing the lies that you are not enslaved to them. You are creative, you do have the time to follow your whimsy, comparison is not why you create.
And it’s fun, it is freeing, there is so much freedom in expression and you are allowed to create. God has already given you permission, don’t let anyone, even your own self, stop you.
He has set us free to be, in him we live and move and have our being. He will not despise our broken hearts and regretful spirits. His grace is our freedom, and we honour this freedom in our surrender to him. This surrender to God’s plan for us is not our natural instinct, but when we surrender our lives into his hands we find freedom in the laying down of our own plans and picking up God’s design. Living open-handed ready to embrace that which he has for us because it is more than we can dream or imagine.
That doesn’t mean this freedom won’t cost us, it will. It may look foolish in others eyes, but it is a freedom to only be concerned with God’s ways and opinions, not of others who don’t put kingdom living first.
Jesus is calling us to freedom in him, he is calling us back to surrendering to him and his ways. Kingdom living, is the way of freedom. The way of freedom is the way of creativity.
We are called to declare this freedom, to share this freedom with others. He has called us to set captives free. This is the truth of God’s kingdom, his way of doing life is perfect and good and just and holy, this is freedom.
Our souls are set free, in freedom we connect with our purpose; to be the playful children of God. Our soul delights in freedom, in the freedom of childlike creativity, in the freedom of a life treasured and accepted and marked out for us by our own creator.
Let us claim our freedom, let us surrender to our freedom and let us declare this freedom for all. A freedom better than we could imagine, whole and just and good.
I pray as you create in your freedom, you will find joy, you will come alive to your creative soul and you will step forward bravely. I pray that your freedom plaque will remind you of all you have been set free to be, and how free you are indeed.
Bible verses on freedom
Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
Psalm 63: 3-5
I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
Psalm 42: 1-2
Isaiah 55: 1-3, Jeremiah 31:25, Philippians 4: 12-13.
Freedom creative project
This project is a symbol of your freedom. God has given us freedom from the trap of sin. As you place keys on the hooks pray for these freedoms to be released in your life and for you to bring these keys of freedom to others.
Free from, free to be, free to give.
Materials and Equipment
Wooden or mdf mount/ plaque, or driftwood, or canvas or box frame
paint or varnish
keys (can be old keys or craft keys)
you may need a screwdriver for the hanging hook
protective sheet or newspaper.
For this you could use a wooden plaque, any piece of driftwood or even a box frame.
Paint your wooden plaque, this one was painted blue then white and then sanded back in places to give it an aged look.
Screw a hook into the back for hanging your plaque.
Decide where to place the keys.
Hammer in nails or screw in hooks from which to hang your nails. Or glue them if using a picture box frame or canvas.
The symbolism of the nails, nailing these keys of freedom remind us of the nails on the cross where Jesus bought us this freedom.
Hang on your keys and hang the plaque to the wall. Let it be a reminder of all that you have been freed from, what you have been freed to be and who you are called to free.
