It’s autumn, do you love this season? Do you wonder how to bring the season into the home to celebrate it and echo the beauty outside – inside? Here’s a little project that you can make in an evening; some velvet conkers. If you ever get lost in the rabbit hole of Pinterest like I do, you may have seen some amazing velvet pumpkins that various creatives and bloggers have made. I love them, but wondered if I could do my own little twist on them, and came up with some little velvet conkers.
Conkers to me symbolise those autumn days back at school when we used to put them on a string, soak them in vinegar or bake them in the oven all for the joy of trying to crack a friends off its string in a game of conkers.
I love conkers shiny coats fresh out of the case, there is no other brown quite like it, it is not uniform and there is a depth and shine to it. Using velvet to make these beauties, evokes that dynamic colour of a conker and the way they shine and capture the light. I had some wooden buttons that were perfect for the top of the conker.
How to make velvet conkers
These velvet conkers really simple to make, you’ll need some brown or deep red or burgundy velvet, (the colour of mine was called chestnut), some embroidery thread, stuffing and a button.
Cut a circle of velvet a little smaller than the size of a side plate.
Stitch around the edge of the circle with your embroidery thread and pull to gather, leaving a hole, fill with stuffing pull the thread to close up the conker and stitch across to hold.
Stitch on a large wooden button to cover the hole, and there you have it. Make some velvet conkers in different sizes and fill a shallow bowl for an autumnal display.
